Communication Skill Training

A trainer should be inspirational rather than a teacher. The trainer’s objective should be to kindle the spark present in each student rather than to dispense knowledge. Students should be made to understand that education is a  life-long journey. It is a bus ride with no terminus. Training is a function that helps us to hone our skills and work on those weaknesses that could hamper our progress through life. Veta understands these nuances pretty well after 37 years in the field. Hence our trainer-content combo becomes a seamless force that integrates the skill of communication with a person’s personality. Veta facilitates one to shed their inhibitions and rise to one’s own and others’ expectations. Veta imbibes the ability to function as a strong link in the chain called TEAM.
Here are a few of our on going projects:
Caterpillar India Pvt Ltd, Chennai
A training was launched at their Tiruvallur factory for about 60 incumbent trainees in the age group of 18-20. They were all technical diploma holders and Caterpillar, the multinational that it is, are keen on training their employees in communicative English. The programme is for 30 hours.
Kingston Educational Institute, Kolkata

We are training 600 of their students from the Diploma, Management and Law streams in all aspects of communication with a mammoth 100-hour delivery schedule. We are also fortifying 250 of their final year students  with job skills and interview handling competence to facilitate their placement.

Human behaviour flows

Plato was spot on when he stated that human behaviour flows from three main sources: Desire, Emotion and Knowledge.
Quite a bit of emotion is innate while much of it along with desire is formed by life’s experiences. They are more or less in place by the time the person is in their late teens. Knowledge by contrast is a lifelong pursuit. Vetacorp plays a vital role in delivering this knowledge, mainly in the domain of communication, leadership and behavioral stature to millions of school children and young adults across India. Written and oral communication, presentation skill, public speaking and the managerial edge one requires to step up from the mediocre to a much higher plane is what Veta empowers young students and executives with.
Given here are a few ongoing projects:
St.Mary’s Matriculation School, Mahabalipuram
In the serene surroundings of this world famous tourist spot nestles this vibrant school run ably by a Catholic missionary. We have been associated with them over the last 2 years and have just kick-started a programme that delivers 40 hours training to 52 of their teachers.
NUSI/ ITF Trust
The Union of Seafarers of India have been very closely associated with Veta for the last 2 years. We have been almost continually involved in training not only the seafarers but also their families in English comprehension and speaking. These projects come from far flung places like Valsad and Diu besides metro centres like Chennai and Mumbai. We have just launched a training at Valsad covering 75 hours of intense exercises.
Schawk India
Here again it is the fourth batch that has just commenced. This IT enabled design company wants all their employees empowered with English fluency. Since the training has stood the test of time through numerous batches, they keep commissioning us for new projects.
Vairam Group Matriculation Hr. Secondary School, Devakottai.
This school in the historic folds of the famous Cherttinad region of Tamil Nadu, first asked us to train all their teachers in spoken English and teacher talk. During this process we selected five teachers to deliver our school plus programme. We are about to launch the TTT of these 5 teachers so that they can carry the mantle of School Plus delivery to their students.  School Plus is one of our more successful programmes for schools as it empowers both, teachers and students.

Body Language

An Introduction
Communication is the essence of vital managerial traits. In communication a spectrum of traits come into play to make it wholesome. Body language or non-verbal communication is one of the cardinal aspects of that spectrum. One can pick up a lot of elements of body language by observing successful people when they speak. In fact an easy method of picking up key body language signals is by observing good actors playing their roles in films.

Research shows that 60 to 90 percent of our communication with others is nonverbal, which means the body language we use is extremely important. In addition, it's especially important to make a good first impression.

Here are 10 pointers to nonverbal communication (NVC).
1.      NVC signals like eye contact, gestures, postures, body movement and tone of voice must be paid attention to.

2.      In congruency between ones words and nonverbal behavior indicates that you have to be careful.

3.      Concentrate on your tone because it carries a wealth of information ranging from enthusiasm to disinterest to anger.

4.      Use good eye contact since failure to maintain the same could signify evasive behaviour or concealment of something.

5.      Question nonverbal signals when confused, for instance you could clarify by asking, “Is that what you meant?”, when in doubt.

6.      Use signals to make your communication more effective and meaningful. For instance your hand movement can stress what you are saying.

7.      Look at signals as a group to accurately read nonverbal behavior as looking at signals in isolation may not give you the whole picture.

8.      Consider context and situation as they play a critical role in communication.

9.      Be aware that signals can be misread. For instance a firm handshake indicates strong personality while a limp handshake signifies lack of fortitude.

10.  Practice. Practice. Practice. Just like verbal communication, NVC also needs constant practice and improvement.

7 Time management Tips

1. Know your goals.
Know your long term and daily goals. These should be very clear.

Activity
1.      Make a list of your goals for the next week.
2.      Make a list of long terms goals (Consider 2 lists here:
a) 1 year goals and b) 3 year goals)

2. Prioritize wisely.
Stephen Covey’s list to help you prioritize.
·         Important and urgent — Tasks that must be done. Do them right away.
·         Important but not urgent — Tasks that appear important, but upon closer examination
aren’t. Decide when to do them.
·         Urgent but not important — Tasks that make the most “noise,” but when accomplished,
have little or no lasting value. Delegate these if possible.
·         Not urgent and not important — Low-priority stuff that offer the illusion of “being busy.”
Do them later.
     Activity
Make a list of ten tasks for the day and break them up based on the above pointers of Covey.

3. Just say no.
You’re the boss. If you have to decline a request in order to attend to what’s truly important and urgent, do not hesitate to do so. Be prepared to move on to more productive tasks. Learn from the experience to avoid wasting time.
       Activity
Can you list down 3 tasks that you performed last week that could have been avoided?

4. Plan ahead.
Planning is perhaps the most underrated exercise that can actually make you or break you.
Once you are thoroughly planned your confidence levels go up and you are able to handle
any hiccups that come your way.

·         The night before — At the end of the day, take 15 minutes to clear your desk and put
together a list of the next day’s most pressing tasks. It’s a great decompression technique,
and you’ll feel better sitting down at a clean desk in the morning.

·         First thing in the morning — Arrive a few minutes early and assemble your prioritized to-do
list. This may prove to be the most productive part of your day. In fact if you are in the habit
of having a morning walk, run through the days plan as you walk.

Activity: Make a plan for tomorrow

5. Eliminate distractions.
Start paying attention to the number of times someone interrupts you when you’re in the midst of an important task. Track self-induced interruptions, too, particularly those of the social media variety. Your smart phone is extremely useful, but it’s also addictive and among the biggest time-wasters known today.
6. Delegate more often.
If you are a manager this is a key skill that you must acquire. Even at the entry level you should learn to delegate or seek help from other to accomplish certain tasks.
.
7. Take care of yourself.
Be sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. An alert mind is a high-functioning mind.

Managerial training

For student of the 80s, college was the final peak to climb before they could put a full stop to their learning. Many of us who were students those days, stopped our formal learning as soon as we achieved graduation. Of course, experiences continues to teach us but gone was the time when we would make a conscious effort to hone a specialized skill in a new field or area. Things have since changed. Every student today, the millennial children are firm in their knowledge that the pursuit of one’s education and skill is lifelong. That they need to ceaselessly traverse the often exciting path of knowledge and self-development is a given. Nietzsche so eloquently captured this in the 19th century itself when he stated, “ On the mountains of truth you can never climb in vain; either you reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow”.

Companies and employees are aware that one must keep climbing in order to survive. One must keep learning too. Vetacorp is today involved in so many efforts across a spectrum industries training and refreshing Human Resources year after year. It has been a learning experience for us too. This year we have scaled new heights by taking our quantitative assessments online thus making it easier for companies with a national footprint. Many more new initiatives are on the anvil.
